Phinelia was born in 1848 in New Orleans, Louisiana, died 13 November 1917 and is buried in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, California.  Her mother was Margaret Griswold Daniels who was born in New York in 1823. She is one of Mark Twain's "peerless Chaparral Quails" immortalized in "Roughing It," Twain's account of his ramblings in the pioneer West. Phinelia lived with her sister May, mother, and step-father, Nehemiah J. Daniels, at French Flat, near Tuttletown, in Old Tuolume. The Daniels girls were belles of the region. Reared in the mountains, they were "finished" at St. Catherine's Covent in Benicia California. The Daniels home at French Flat became a center of happy young life. Billy Gillis of Jackass Hill brought Young Sam Clemens as a guest. Later, the author gave the "Chaparral Quails" (Phinelia and May) a lasting place in his writing. Herbert tried to have her arrested on a charge of abducting a minor because Russell was underage. Miss Annette Lucky George was a singer who couldn't sing. She was valuable on the stage only because of the way she was built. Russell's father gave power of attorney over Russell to his brother Herbert. George lied claiming that she and Russell had been married.
